Intent
To enable our children to leave Dagnall Chruch of England School as musically literate children and instill in them a lifelong love of music.
At Dagnall C of E School we believe that music plays an important role in helping children to feel part of a community. The children at Dagnall C of E School are provided with opportunities to play, create, perform and enjoy music both in class and to an audience. They can showcase their compositions and improvisations to a piece of music to a range of audiences. This takes place in many forms such as assemblies, class performances and seasonal productions. In music lessons, the children are consistently developing a range of skills, including listening, singing, playing, evaluating and composing across a wider variety of historical periods, styles, traditions and musical genres.
Implementation
Dagnall C of E School’ music curriculum ensures children can sing, listen, play, perform and evaluate. This is embedded during our music blocks and activities that may take place in other areas of the curriculum. We use the musical program Charanga to support our teaching of music. Through the use of this scheme children are exposed to a wide range of musical genres and composers and start to develop an understanding of how music has changed overtime.
A progression of skills document has been made to show the development across different year groups and how the skills they were taught early on, are repeated in order to embed and consolidate learning. The children are exposed to, and given the opportunity, to learn music specific vocabulary in a meaningful context. Using Charanga allows for the development and use of singing voices, body percussion and actions. In addition, they learn how to handle and play classroom instruments.
We provide children with the opportunity to enjoy music outside of taught lessons by running a choir and a recorder club during lunchtime.
A weekly singing assembly gives the opportunity to sing together as a key stage.
Within the Early Years Foundation Stage, children are exposed to a wide variety of songs and rhymes and they start to learn how to perform together.
Impact
The children at Dagnall C of E School enjoy their music lessons and the range of activities that take place. They are eager to improve their skills and use music specific vocabulary to explain and evaluate. The children gain knowledge on how music has changed overtime, through listening to a range of high-quality pieces of music, from a range of genres and styles.
They are inspired to develop a love for music and seek out opportunities to take part in what they love. For some children, music builds confidence and self-esteem and allows them to be creative in what they do and feel a sense of achievement.
