Religious Education (RE) at Dagnall CofE School
Intent
The aim of Religious Education is to ensure that, through delivering an engaging and inclusive curriculum, children will acquire knowledge and understanding about the beliefs and worldviews of themselves and others. Our curriculum is designed to encourage children’s social, moral, spiritual and cultural awareness and sense of awe and wonder for the diversity in the world around them. We hope to foster inquisitive, respectful learners who are open-minded and inclusive within a modern society and who celebrate in the diversity of God’s world.
Implementation
We are a Church of England Primary School and we follow the Buckinghamshire Agreed Syllabus ‘Challenging RE’. To support us to deliver the aims set out in the locally agreed syllabus, we use NATRE scheme as a basis for our curriculum, adapted to fit our cohorts specific needs. Through this scheme we incorporate ‘Understanding Christianity’ through our Christian focused units. Our RE curriculum is weighted towards Christianity with children learning about Christianity each year. In addition, in order to compare and contrast religions and worldviews, other religions such as Hinduism, Sikhism, Judaism, and Islam covered throughout each 2 year rolling programme. The curriculum is mapped so that children have the opportunity to revisit key religions to deepen their understanding and build upon prior learning. (See Appendix 1 – Curriculum Overview)
This is done through visiting places of worship, discussions with faith leaders, workshops, class discussions and activities and creative arts. Children’s learning is recorded in a class book and celebrated in displays around the school.
We value the religious backgrounds of all members of the school and local community and encourage rich discussion around these faiths.
Impact
Our Religious Education curriculum is well thought out and is planned to demonstrate progression. If children are keeping up with the curriculum they are deemed to be making expected progress. We measure the impact through the following methods:
- A reflection on standards achieved against the planned outcomes
- Pupil discussion and reflection of learning
- By looking at the work produced through displays and class books
Schools have a statutory duty to teach RE however parents have the right to withdraw their children from all or part of RE lessons. If you have any concerns about the RE taught at Dagnall, please do speak to the class teacher in the first instance or contact our RE lead of Head Teacher via the office.
